WASHINGTON -- A 13-ton, marble tribute to a trio of women's suffragists is about to get its place in the Capitol Rotunda. But a black women's organization is still unhappy.
The National Political Congress of Black People, which supported the four-year campaign to display the sculpture beneath the Capitol dome, now wants it kept out because it ignores Sojourner Truth, a black contributor to the cause.
The former slave, abolitionist and champion of voting rights for women should be chiseled into an unfinished slab of the monument, argues civil rights activist C. Delores Tucker, chairwoman of the caucus.
