Willem de Kooning, widely considered one of the greatest painters of the second half of the 20th century, died Wednesday, at age 92, in his studio on Long Island, N.Y.

The artist, who had suffered from Alzheimer's disease, died of natural causes, according to an attorney for the De Kooning Conservatory.

The Dutch-born painter who came to America as a teen-age stowaway joined the inner circle of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s, grouped with such titans as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.
