The world is witnessing the collapse of a land that became independent in 1960 but never really became a nation. Zaire did, however, become a pawn in the Cold War.
After murderous infighting that then, like now, weighed most heavily on the poor and defenseless, the struggle for the land was resolved in favor of the West, or at least not in favor of the Soviet Union, which had sought an African colony there. The price of that victory over Soviet imperialism was a regime whose corruption was surpassed only by its ineptitude.
