The federal agency that ordered Montana to kill hundreds of bison outside Yellowstone National Park this winter may extend the policy to elk.
``Elk have to be part of the long term solution,'' said Pat Collins of the Agriculture Department's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
APHIS ordered Montana to kill all bison that wandered out of the park to prevent spread of a disease that causes abortions in cattle. About half the park's bison carry the disease, brucellosis.
