REDDING, CALIF. -- The children of East Cottonwood Elementary School, more than 300 strong, pour out of the school here each Friday afternoon during school hours.
What began nine years ago when seven young children were allowed to leave the school for a brief period of religious instruction has grown into an enormously popular ``released time'' program involving more than half the school's students in grades one through four.
The children are escorted to St. Anne's Catholic Church down the street for a lively half-hour of singing, prayer and Bible stories. The first session is for first-and ...
