In mid-April - with 148 games remaining in the season - the Chicago Cubs were just playing for pride. After a National League-record 14 consecutive losses to open the season, it seemed they had little else to play for.
Six weeks later, they find themselves playing for a pennant. But this isn't the story of a miraculous comeback. It's the story of a division of mediocrity.
