Internationally known archaeologist and former University of Colorado Museum curator Joe Ben Wheat died June 12.
Mr. Wheat, 81, who was born in Van Horn, Texas, on April 21, 1916, broke into archaeology at age 11 when he had gathered a substantial collection of American Indian artifacts.
Mr. Wheat earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1937 and a master's degree and doctorate from the University of Arizona in 1949 and 1953 after serving in the Army during World War II.
