Susan Duncan wobbled, then reached to steady herself on the broad, furry back at her side. Joe, her 90-pound mutt, stayed beside her as she walked to the microphone.
Duncan was a registered nurse before multiple sclerosis robbed her of her ability to hold down a job. Frustrated by the agencies that told her she wasn't disabled enough to qualify for a service dog, she trained Joe herself to help her with such everyday tasks as retrieving objects and loading the washing machine. He made her employable again, she says.
``Joe gave me back my life,'' she says.
