CHICAGO -- Exogenous thyroid replacement does not reduce bone mineral density in women, Swedish investigators found in a population-based study of more than 10,000 women 49-69 years old.
Thyroxine is one of the drugs most widely prescribed for chronic use in postmenopausal women. The hormone influences bone turnover, directly stimulating osteoclast activity and bone resorption. Also, women with a history of hyperthyroidism have an increased risk of hip fracture. But the role of thyroid hormone replacement on bone is unresolved.
