Imagine trying to make a steel sword or a large bronze statue without any knowledge of the scientific principles involved. Artists and artisans have been doing that for many centuries, which could sometimes lead to problems they didn't understand.
Many years ago, an art instructor at Iowa State University asked a materials scientist colleague, Dr. Rohit Trivedi, FASM, why bubbles appeared in metal castings on cloudy days. Dr. Trivedi explained that hydrogen molecules from the humidity in the air were being trapped in the metal mold. From this conversation, Dr. Trivedi was inspired to create a course in materials science for the benefit of art students.
