Luigi Manuppelli, president of Omeoindustria, the Italian association of homeopathic medicine producers, has said that one out of two homeopathic products sold in Italy is at risk because of the country's 2001 budget legislation which envisages a simplified registration for such products by December 2002, similar to that for conventional pharmaceutical products.

Homeopathic drugs in Italy are backed by 7,000 prescribing doctors and used by some six million people. Total annual spending on these products is estimated at around 400 billion lire ($177.8 million). The ...
