Contradictions abound in the image of contemporary China presented in the photo show "China: Fifty Years Inside the People's Republic," which opens Sunday at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
Featuring about 175 images by 20 of the world's top photographers, the show offers a panoramic picture of an ancient agrarian nation rushing headlong into 21st-century urban modernity. Though China's current government is a mere 50 years old, the show is so top-heavy with recent pictures that the early years of the People's Republic are shortchanged. Even so, the exhibition will, for many viewers, open an unusual window into contemporary Chinese life.
