BURLINGTON, Vt. -- A 220-year-old gunboat commanded by American Revolutionary general and traitor Benedict Arnold has been found at the bottom of a lake in one of the most significant maritime discoveries in 50 years, researchers said Monday.
They said the 54-foot long boat was part of a 15-ship squadron led by Arnold, who commanded the American naval fleet on Lake Champlain during the Revolutionary War against the British before committing treason.
The gunboat was found earlier this month, sitting upright on the bottom of Lake Champlain, which borders New York, Vermont and Quebec. The lake's cold, fresh water has helped preserve ...
