MONTERREY, Mexico -- Friends and family of Ricardo Aldape Guerra wept for joy here fours months ago when the Mexican man won his freedom after 14 years on death row in Texas.

On Friday they returned to weep in mourning, following news that a car accident late Thursday had brought an abrupt end to Aldape's celebrated freedom.

``It seems like that was his destiny, like he felt his death coming because he lived life to the maximum after beeing freed,'' his sister Elvira Aldape, told reporters. ``The pleasure of having him with us didn't last long.''
