When Jose Canseco signed with the Oakland Athletics as a 15th-round draft choice out of Coral Park High School in June 1982, he was, by his own description, a 190-pound ``typical nerd with some athletic ability.''
He had never taken baseball too seriously. He didn't even play full time until his senior year, although his batting-practice home runs precipitated a 20-foot-high fence being built around the field to protect the houses across the street.
