Two locally built rockets costing taxpayers more than half a billion dollars are about to launch secret satellites to spy on Earth.
The satellites atop both rockets are classified Department of Defense missions. Both will be operated by the National Reconnaissance Organization, a military agency that manages spy satellites so secret its existence wasn't acknowledged until 1992.
The first of the huge Titan IVA rockets built by Lockheed Martin Astronautics in Jefferson County is scheduled to take off Tuesday in California. The second is slated for a Nov. 1 launch from Florida.
