As the 1960s unfolded, drummer Roy Haynes named his band the Hip Ensemble. That name was a little too cute and didn't last. But in some ways, it was on the money. After all, the Boston-born Haynes, who appears at the Mount Vernon Country Club on Thursday, has always projected an aura of hipness.
Born in 1926 and starting his career in the mid-1940s, Haynes quickly went on to back some of the leading figures in be-bop and its aftermath.
