LONGMONT -- Jack Murphy, the farm implements dealer whose folksy political acumen helped make Boulder County a stronghold for the Democratic Party, died Tuesday. He was 82.
When a Republican county commissioner died in 1967 while Republican Gov. John Love was out of state, Democratic Lt. Gov. Mark Hogan quickly appointed Mr. Murphy to take his place.
Republicans howled, but Mr. Murphy assumed the job, and was re-elected four times.
