LOS ANGELES -- As official Washington welcomed China's President Jiang Zemin on Wednesday, one of the strongest voices of dissent has come from a Hollywood actor.
Richard Gere is winning new respect in some quarters for his protests and the actor, aided by three bodyguards and a make-up man, was the star of an 800-strong demonstration outside the White House while Jiang was inside talking to President Clinton.
As New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd put it, ``Whoever thought the American Gigolo (the title of one of Gere's earliest and best-known movies) would become a light unto America?
