When Merrilee Peterson of Boulder feels a cold coming on, she looks past antibiotics and chicken soup and reaches for the echinacea. She's one of thousands of Americans who spent almost $14 million over the past year for the herbal supplement they are convinced boosts the body's immunity.
Peterson, 30, has been using echinacea for four years. ``A lot of times when you're battling something, your body starts to really war with itself,'' she says. ``With echinacea, you can almost sense the strength.''
