RENO, Nev. -- Craig Breedlove and his crew spent last winter rebuilding the crumpled hull of the jet-powered car that wrecked in 1996 while he tried to break the land speed record.
The crash was costly, leading to a series of mechanical problems during what Breedlove called the ``summer from hell.'' Despite his renewed efforts to break the record this fall on the sprawling Black Rock Desert, a British team beat him to it in his own back yard.
``I'm extremely disappointed,'' he said. ``I'm just going to haul my stuff back home and start making plans for next year.''
