Just a few blocks from the Pro Kids Golf Academy, gangs are competing for territory and drug deals are being made. On many days, the serenity of a golf lesson is broken by the sound of police sirens.
But the academy flourishes as a symbol of pride in its struggling, working-class San Diego neighborhood. To the children, it provides a place to learn golf and to chase dreams. To the instructors, it is an inspiration to see children from diverse backgrounds and ethnic groups pursue golf, no longer perceiving the sport to be too white, too rich or too square.
