MEXICO CITY -- The mayor-elect of Mexico's huge, polluted capital pledged to curb soaring crime and crack down on corruption when he takes office.
A veteran leftist who has twice failed to become president, Cuauhtemoc Cardenas faces the toughest challenge of his political career when he is sworn in on Dec. 5.
Analysts say Cardenas must tame Mexico City's increasing violence and disorder, tackle its worsening poverty and attract private investment back to the capital if he wants to fulfill his dream of winning the presidency in 2000.
