If language buffs were movie buffs, a new dictionary from Random House would provide a big bag of popcorn. You could nibble away for hours.
The book is Volume II of Historical Dictionary of American Slang. The first volume, covering slang from aardvark through gytch, appeared in 1994. This work takes us from habitch through Ozzie. The final volume, covering letters P through Z, is scheduled for publication in 2000.
(For the record, an aardvark is an oaf or a fool. To gytch is to steal. A habitch is a habitual criminal; an Ozzie is an Australian.)
