WASHINGTON _ The Florida Supreme Court's surprise decision Friday to order a partial recount of ballots in the state created something akin to legal chaos.
One set of attorneys for Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush rushed immediately to a federal courthouse in Atlanta, seeking an emergency injunction to block any recounting before an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Other Bush attorneys tangled into the night in a courtroom in Tallahassee, Fla., with lawyers for Democratic candidate Al Gore over the standards to be used to recount as many as 40,000 ballots statewide.
