House Democrats elected Carol Snyder, D-Northglenn, assistant minority leader on Thursday.
Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, resigned the post because she's considering running for Pat Schroeder's U.S. House seat.
Snyder defeated Rep. Ken Gordon, D-Denver, after Rep. Nolbert Chavez, D-Denver, quit the race.
"I'm concerned that we send a message to the Republicans," Chavez said in stepping aside. "I want them to know that we are unified, not divided. I want them to know that we are ready to fight and ready to debate the issues in a healthy way."
