The Rocky Mountain News on Thursday won the general excellence award in a statewide journalism competition.
The News, Denver's largest daily, also won first place in nine of 16 editorial categories in the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters Contest.
The News won more first-place awards than The Denver Post and the Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph combined, the state's two other newspapers with circulations above 100,000. The Post won five and the Gazette-Telegraph two.
