FORT LAUDERDALE -- An unlikely transformation is nearly complete along a once-bawdy, mile-long stretch of beachfront that served for decades as the setting of a wet-and- wild rite of the season: spring break.
This famous oceanfront community once attracted as many as 350,000 college youths a year over a boisterous, nine-week stretch from March to early May. Nowadays it is quiet and sedate, clean and comfortable.
In fact, it's downright mature, a far cry from the rowdy years after film classic Where the Boys Are immortalized Lauderdale as the place to party during Easter vacation.
