FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Regardless of what the rule book says, what's a strike and what's a ball has always been in the eye of the beholder. Each plate umpire sees things through his own eyes, and his word is law.
Still, there are printed rules, and it is a matter of record that the official strike zone has been altered for the 1996 season. The players are reserving the right to be skeptical about its application.
