Belarus, known as the ``quiet republic'' when it was part of the old Soviet Union, is suddenly making waves.
Its president, Alexander Lukashenko, wants to rejoin Russia. The two countries are due to sign an economic integration pact next Tuesday, but Lukashenko sees this as merely a transition to eventual reunification.
Many Belarussians are against the idea - some got their heads cracked protesting it - but Lukashenko says: ``It's time to stop duping the people. Let's conclude a pact about a real union. If the people look nostalgically on the collapse of the Soviet Union, let's call it the USSR.''
