Encore Media founder John Sie saw the decline of cable TV's pay services coming years ago.
People were ignoring or leaving premium channels such as Home Box Office and Showtime, and there weren't enough new subscribers signing up to replace the departed.
But five years after gambling on a strategy based on exploiting the gap between what viewers were getting and what they wanted, Sie's Encore has moved sharply in the other direction, going from upstart to multimillion-subscriber dynamo.
