Denver's name remains on the Winter Park Ski Area permit only as long as the private non-profit corporation, Winter Park Recreational Association, runs the resort.
If the city ever were to end its contract with the association, it would lose the U.S. Forest Service permit for the ski area, with no guarantee it would qualify for a new one.
In addition, Denver won't recover ownership of the buildings and lifts at the Mary Jane base area of Winter Park at the end of the city's contract with the association in 2078.
