COLORADO SPRINGS -- This city was founded with a railroad spike, the first bang in the building of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad.
Today, Colorado Springs is rushing headlong into a future as a new kind of crossroads. And this time, the tourist train is a discount airliner.
Western Pacific Airlines started flying just one year ago today. But in that short time, company chairman Ed Beauvais has made it the nation's only coast-to-coast, low-fare airline, with 1,473 employees.
