The day after adopting neighborhood schools, the Denver school board Wednesday began grappling with another new phenomenon.
Poaching.
A number of schools see the end of busing as the start of aggressive marketing. Parents, particularly in central and east Denver, have been spreading the virtues of their schools with door-to-door leaflets.
The competition for students is driven by survival: Schools with sizable enrollments stand the best chance of staying open as the district looks to close underutilized schools in the next few years.
