BOSTON -- The regular use of beta carotene supplements, whose reputation earns the health industry tens of millions a year, does not prevent cancer or slow heart disease, two studies released Wednesday stated.

The findings of the studies, being published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, ``should put to rest any remaining hopes'' that the supplements can help lower the risk of cancer and heart disease, said a Journal editorial.

There have been recent indications that the benefits of beta carotene, found in carrots, fish-liver oils, milk and dairy products, were overblown.
