WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that all-male, state-supported colleges and universities such as the Virginia Military Institute cannot exclude women.
The 7-1 decision shatters a 157-year-old tradition at the Virginia Military Institute as well as at The Citadel in South Carolina, the nation's only other all-male military college. The Citadel last year was ordered to admit its first woman, but she dropped out shortly after classes began.
