When he is in America, as he is now for a few weeks, British military historian John Keegan thinks of ``the littleness of England . . . it's such a tiny country that you feel as if you know everyone, you feel comfortable.''
And when he's home in England, Keegan says he envisions America ``as a place where you have an enormous sense of liberation, a feeling that you can just point your feet and go . . . but the distances are so immense that people can be lonely, feel very isolated.''
