Before Interstate 70 was constructed, a trip to Dillon and the rest of Summit County area meant a commitment of up to two hours, chugging behind 18-wheelers on a winding, two-lane U.S. 6. Switchbacking up the Georgetown hill was a test of patience, only to be followed by white-knuckle nightmares over Loveland Pass.
Unless you endured driving during those years, you may not appreciate how I-70 has streamlined trips west, making Dillon a quick hour from Denver. It's close enough for scores of commuters to make the daily drive from their mountain homes to work in big D.
