A resident of Westminster who calls himself an avid reader of the News Science page was confused recently by information in a story about the thin ring of dust encircling Jupiter. The story was based on a study done by a researcher at the University of Colorado and another at the University of Kansas. It included ``detailed analysis of images recorded by the Voyager spacecraft during its tour of the outer solar system beginning in 1977.'' What was found was that dust particles in this thin ring are continuously shed onto the surface of Jupiter, in contrast to the more stable rings of some other planets.
