As Asthma Awareness Week was observed in Colorado July 21-27, Englewood's Amy Van Dyken helped the nation focus on the disease by winning four Olympic gold medals, in spite of her lifelong struggle with the illness.
Van Dyken's story is by now well-known. She was born with asthma, and had her first attack before she was old enough to remember it. One of her earliest memories is being in the hospital.
``When I was little, Mom had to tie the inhaler around my neck so I wouldn't lose it,'' Van Dyken says. ``I had this cool necklace to wear all the time.''
