MIAMI -- Sparky Anderson offered the advice - more than once.
Tony La Russa never paid attention.
``Sparky would tell me, `Before you are done, you ought to manage in the National League,' '' La Russa said. ``It would go in one ear and out the other. I always felt expertise in the league was an advantage. I was reluctant to give it up.''
Now, however, La Russa understands what Anderson was talking about.
After 16 1/2 years as a manager in the American League, La Russa is the new kid on the block in the NL, the first-year manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.
