VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- A British Columbian Indian tribe has won a temporary injunction blocking a spectacular mask from being sold to a Chicago resident for $345,000, according to a report recently from the Canadian Press news agency.
The Echo mask was carved in 1860 to be a centerpiece for Nuxalk dances celebrating the creation of the world.
The mask, with flaring nostrils, bulging cheeks and six different mouthpieces, has been featured in books and film documentaries.
A Nuxalk individual sold it this year to a Vancouver Island dealer for about $30,000 without tribal approval.
