For those seeking a different sort of holiday concert, ``Israel in Egypt'' is powerful, dramatic and anything but saccharin.
The University of Wisconsin Choral Union delivered a fine first of two performances of Handel's oratorio before a crowd of about 330 people Thursday.
Featuring big, bold walls of sound, the work has the added feature of being of interest to all the religions of Abraham: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Celebrants of Kwanzaa also will find their story echoed. And as my editor points out, there's also something in it for followers of the ancient Egyptian sun god, Ra.
