WASHINGTON -- A federal task force has rejected proposals to create a ''multiracial'' category on census forms. Instead, it recommended that people be allowed to list themselves in as many separate categories as apply.

Current federal standards for listing race were adopted in 1977 in an effort to compile information needed to enforce anti-discrimination laws.
