It didn't take Scott Wiggins long to figure out how much difference aluminum bats make in helping college baseball hitters.
''The second guy I faced (in professional baseball for the New York Yankees Class A affiliate in Oneonta, N.Y.) hit a ball to straightaway center, and I thought, 'Oh, no, that one's going out,' '' Wiggins said. ''I turned around to watch it and all of a sudden I see our center fielder running in to catch it. I was so used to balls just jumping off the aluminum bats.''
Wooden bats may partially explain why Wiggins has been so successful in his first professional season ...
