WASHINGTON -- It's been a long time, 79 years to be exact, since the Boston Red Sox have won a World Series, a tragedy that many New Englanders attribute to the Curse of Babe Ruth.
Before the start of the 1920 season, Bosox owner Harry Frazee, looking to make an investment in a musical that came to be known as No No Nanette, sold the Bambino to the New York Yankees for the then princely sum of $177,500. Nanette made it to Broadway, the Sultan of Swat made it to the Hall of Fame and the Sox have managed to make it only as far as Palookaville ever since.
That, the denizens of Fenway Park assert sagely, is the Curse of Babe ...
