Few plants have the regal bearing and statuesque dignity of lilies.
Old gardens often featured beds of regal, madonna or tiger lilies, in either white or tawny orange. An established lily bed could remain in place for generations. There were no pests; and, in a well-drained bed, the bulbs would flourish and multiply.
Most of our supply of lily bulbs came from Asia, but that source was eliminated during World War II.
Bulbs, when they were available at all, came in from other places, and some of those bulbs were contaminated with viruses that all but eliminated the lily trade for many years.
