WASHINGTON -- Acupuncture, the Chinese needle therapy on the fringe of American medicine for years, received a limited endorsement from a National Institutes of Health committee that found it controls some types of pain and nausea.

''We came to the clear-cut decision that the treatment ... really did work'' for limited uses, said Dr. David J. Ramsay, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and chairman of the NIH panel.

The 12-member committee of independent doctors and scientists said Wednesday that it found strong evidence showing acupuncture is effective for treatment of pain after surgery or dental ...
