''The Jackal'' answers two important questions:
Yes, the popular 1973 film ''The Day of the Jackal'' can be updated without sacrificing any of the suspenseful thrills.
And, yes, Bruce Willis makes a most excellent villain.
Willis, of course, is best known for the slightly off-center hero type he developed for the ''Die Hard'' movie series.
But those who have seen some of his other performances know that there's a pretty decent actor behind those macho roles, and ''The Jackal'' is further proof of that.
