TOKYO, Dec 12 Asia Pulse - Five major Japanese trading houses have announced their intention to integrate their electronic data interchange (EDI) systems linked to steelmakers into a single network.
The firms are Mitsui & Co (TSE:8031), Mitsubishi Corp (TSE:8058), Sumitomo Corp (TSE:8053), Itochu Corp (TSE:8001) and Marubeni Corp(TSE:8002).
Until now, the five have separately operated EDI systems to place orders for steel materials with steelmakers. Integration will cost a total of around 1 billion yen, 80% less than if the traders each updated their systems individually. The single network is slated to start operations in April 2003.
